CIRCADIAN
LIGHTS
Research indicates that light affects both the human visual and non-visual systems and that electric light can impact the human body’s circadian rhythms.
IMPACTING CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS
Light has the power to affect our health, alertness, productivity and even regulate our sleep and wake-up cycles. Our circadian rhythms are influenced by receiving signals from the eyes that report day and night. So by imitating the course of the day, light can provide physiological benefits that complement human circadian rhythms and stimulate energy levels that support a sense of wellbeing and performance.
The lighting industry has well-established light level recommendations for tailoring light wavelengths, together with light intensity and color temperatures to achieve intended treatments or applications.
For example, simulating the mid-day sun with high spectral blue light can increase performance capability and concentration. And of course the opposite also applies. By reducing light levels with a warmer color temperature, the body winds down as an evening atmosphere is created. By controlling lighting parameter such as these, we can have directly positive effects on human circadian rhythms.
